    Oral tradition has it that James Moran was a coachman for Margaret Jamieson's family and that the couple eloped to Canada when her parents wouldn't approve the marriage.

    Under the Militia Act of 1793, each male inhabitant between the ages of 16 to 50 was required to enroll as a militiaman and attend annual muster on the King's birthday (4 June).

    Died:
    In the index of burials for Notre Dame Basilica, Ottawa, there is a record for a James Moran, died 1 May 1857, buried 3 May 1857. His age is listed as 46, which is off by a decade or so. Unfortunately, while the index has survived, the years 1856-1861 are missing from the actual register.
