| "On Saturday last, Mr. John McGlade, after a slight illness of a day or two, was stricken down by the hand of death, and his remains were buried in the Catholic Cemetery on Monday. Deceased was for many years a well known carter in town, and owner of the sand-pit, from which many hundreds of dollars of sand was taken. He was born in the North of Ireland, and came to Canada about forty years ago. He leaves a wife and grown up family." |

- According to the 1871 census (research by John Alexander Moran) the family had one lot of two acres on which there were two dwellings and one barn. They had 3 wagons and 1 plough, along with a bit of livestock: a horse, a cow, and a pig. They had sold 70 pounds of butter in the preceeding year.
