The deceased had been blind for the last couple of years and for some time previous to that he had been confined to the house. He moved from Drummond township into Montague about four years ago. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife two daughters and one son.

    Oral tradition has it that James Moran was a coachman for Margaret Jamieson's family and that the couple eloped to Canada when her parents wouldn't approve the marriage.

    In the index of burials for Notre Dame Basilica, Ottawa, there is a record for a James Moran, died 1 May 1857, buried 3 May 1857. His age is listed as 46, which is off by a decade or so. Unfortunately, while the index has survived, the years 1856-1861 are missing from the actual register.
