Notes |
- Dad remembered Thomas Burke from when he was said to be "doty" (i.e., in his dotage), and recounted a story (which he might have got from Mildred Stanton?) of Tommy Burke arguing with another farmer about the sale of a horse or something, just outside of St. Isidore's on their way into Mass. Apparently the two men kept bargaining as they walked into the church, and then Tommy dipped his fingers into the holy water and said, even as he was crossing himself, "Fifty dollars is my final offer, and not a goddamn cent more!"
